The other day I was reflecting on where my keyboard came from – how the raw materials in the plastic were once plants and animals thousands of years ago.
It led me to reflect on how everything around me came from nature: the computer, the cup, the walls… and how people molded, transformed and combined trees, rock, clay and hundreds of other things to make these amazing shapes.
I felt a deep appreciation for the creativity and invention of thousands of people over time.
How do you experience the inanimate objects in your home?

This is a most rewarding topic for exploration…thank you for bringing it forward…to me it seems that the more we learn about the fragile yet resilent qualities of the earth’s resources and the damaging impact that making things has on the environment and all living beings the more natural it is to turn toward a life of voluntary simplicity and protection for all of life’s treasures.
We have so much to remember, and to remind one another, about living simply and close to the land. This is a fitting legacy to leave.

One of the neat thought-programs for children is to have them follow ANYTHING and EVERYTHING back to its original source….it always leads to the sun and plants, no matter what is it. Try it! Quite an eye-opening experience

There is so much that humanity as a whole is so disconnected from and the impact that we have on the resources of this planet is one of those realities. When I explore what I currently have in my possession there are two major components – what I need (the question here is do I really need it) and what I value (memories from my life). In either case any thing that I own has been derived from the raw resources of this planet. Those who have been a part of the process that has created these objects is an interesting view to ponder but to most people that fact is totally transparent and therefore irrelevant. Sandy’s reference to the exercise with children should be a standard part of educational curriculum to be repeated again and again and again so that the IMPACT of what it means to create something is imbedded in their mind’s eye. Depicting through the media a form of persistent story tellling that confronts the public with the meaning of IMPACT should also take place on a steady basis but unfortunately happens only in the form of brief news stories or documentaries that not everyone gets to see. This will be the only way that the concept of a simple life will begin to have meaning and ultimately manifest itself in reality. Sorry for the gloominess but fits the weather pattern we have been having here in the NorthEast these last few days!! We will survive!

This really caught my eye and started me thinking. What a great reminder of the inter-connectedness of all things.
