Late at night when the world is quiet, it seems nature comes to the forefront. I step outside and the air and trees and sky draw my attention. I wonder if there is something about that time – the night – that pulls me to my senses, or maybe there are fewer distractions from the tasks and activity of the daytime. What does stepping outside at night do for you?

Some scents are stronger at night. There are wild flowers, and some garden flowers, too, like night-scented stock, that give off their scent only at night to attract moths.

When entering the nighttime the first thing I always sense no matter what time of the year is the cooler air which leads to a sense of refreshment, stimulation and awakening!! The other primary sensation I experience, assuming it is not cloudy, is the continuous wonder of the universe when you see the constantly shifting landscape of stars and the moon as it changes shape. I wish I lived in a really dark place so I could see even more of that wondrous vision – guess I have to satisfied with the hubble pictures!!

I doubt there’s anything lovelier than a moonlight ski tour in the Rockies. I’m located in N. Utah where we recieve the “Greatest Snow on Earth”, along with spectacular hoar frost that glitters like diamonds and prisms all colors of the rainbow. I will be taking several of my high school and college students for a tour in Smithfield Canyon this weekend- wishing you all could join us!

I love the early morning 3:00 – 4:00 am, when it is completely dark and the activities of the day before have ended and the activities of the day to come are not yet begun. There is a stillness that is filled with potential.

I just visited a friend who lives on the west coast of Florida; after dinner we took a long walk in the moonlight…the sounds of the crickets and frogs filled the cool air, and the stars filled the sky….serene and quiet! This does seem to be one of the things missing in our society: completing the days’ activities with the peaceful closure of moonlight.

Stepping outside at.night always gives me a sence of self and place. The stars make it seem like the Earth is touching the sky and us with it.

Stepping outside at night always seems like a great way to commune with the people that came before us – after all, many civilizations were fascinated and intrigued by the night sky, and knew its rhythms well enough to travel, plant, and celebrate by it. There is also endless fascination in looking up and wondering what else is out there that we cannot see.

What a wonderful photo… It captures my feeling of the night, peeking through the leaves at the moon – secure yet open wide to the whole universe 🙂 Lovely.

Sometimes late at night I sit on the front porch and listen to the water from the nearby stream. Insects and tree frogs chirp noisily and while I commune with nature an occasional car passes by oblivious to nature.
I pity people who do not have front porches.

The one thing I love about winter is the night sky. The cold, clear skies with brillant stars bring such peace to my world. I don’t know what it is, but I never tire of looking up, and greeting old friends, like Orion. If there is a full moon, all the better. I don’t have a front porch but I do have a back deck, and although a bit obstructed, always worth the effort.

When I connect with starlight I feel a peaceful presence, awakening an inner knowing of a deeper relationship with the universe.

This is such a great idea. I’ve just begun to pause and enjoy the pictures and read the comments. It’s such a worthwhile hiatus in a world so full of woe!

I live near the woods by a lake, and often step outside before going to bed. The deep quiet and beauty give me a sense of peace, especially in the moonlight. One has a sense of what the world has always been, and how it will always be.
